A. Yu. Yakubovsky's Contribution to The Study of The Zarafshan Valley

This article provides a detailed examination and historiographical analysis of the systematic archaeological reconnaissance expeditions conducted in the Zarafshan Valley in 1934 and 1939 under the leadership of A. Yu. Yakubovsky. The expeditions were organized by the State Hermitage Museum jointly with the State Academy for the History of Material Culture and Uzkomstaris. They yielded a substantial body of archaeological material that laid the foundation for many years of systematic research in the Zarafshan Valley. These results also enabled A. Yu. Yakubovsky to develop theoretical works devoted to the principal stages in the evolution of Central Asian cities. The article is based on publications by the expedition leader, V. A. Shishkin and other participants, as well as archival materials preserved in the archives of the Institute for the History of Material Culture in St Petersburg.
