Translating Uzbek Criminal Argot And Prison Jargon Into Russian Through Corpus Analysis

The paper analyses how criminal argot and prison jargon in Tahir Malik's novel Shaytanat move from Uzbek into Russian. Working from a sentence aligned Uzbek to Russian parallel corpus of the novel and its 2016 Russian version, the author sorts translation solutions into functional analog, restoration of borrowed fenya, low colloquial compensation, calque, transcription, and neutralization. The source speech proves heavily russified, carrying criminal slang such as otvechayt, shikalad, and братишка, so translation often restores a Russian original rather than replacing it. Neutralization, a minority solution, produces the register loss that corpus based translation research links to normalization.
